L'humanisme est un mot-choc et surdetermine qui appelle la definition d'un champ. C'est la Renaissance, ce temps de bouleversements et de crises, qui va donner tout son relief a la notion de dignitas hominis. Celle-ci se cristallise autour d'une liberte creatrice qui est tout d'abord liberation de la pensee. Pic de la Mirandole, en des accents singulierement modernes, l'exaltera a l'extreme. Retour de la philosophie aux Anciens, par-dela le declin de la scolastique, ivresse de l'esprit qui, parcourant librement l'histoire de la pensee, croit reconnaitre partout des eclairs de verite . L'esprit devient alors comme un pole d'attraction pour la metaphysique. Agent de correspondances et d'unite, hors de toute frontiere factice, il se mire dans cette nature qui lui fait signe comme son double. Dans ce contexte, il n'est de philosopheme mieux que la metamorphose qui puisse rendre la voix de l'homme de la Renaissance, partage et paradoxal, a la croisee d'un monde qui finit et d'un autre qui commence. Exaspere par le sentiment de ses limites, il sait qu'il doit parcourir l'etre dans sa diversite et epouser toutes les formes de pensee et de vie pour s'arracher a sa finitude.
